What is the Business Plan

Several causes for companies' failure  have already been raised, such as lack of working capital, tax burden, lack of demand or competition. On the internal side, the lack of administrative and financial management are also common items in reports of write-downs by companies. 

Despite several factors,there is a root cause for these difficulties: lack of planning. The business plan is not just about defining words of reinforcement, but about investigating the current scenario (based on market research) and defining guidelines for the company's actions.


A study¹ in the state of Maranhão with 3,700 entrepreneurs who had their doors closed reveals that only1 in 10 entrepreneurs made a business plan. And even among those who did the planejamento, only 3% updated their plan after starting business.

 

In Rio Grande do Sul, researchers² evaluated thatonly 15% of the entrepreneurs interviewed  had previously identified the number of customers their company could reach. This low percentage was also repeated when evaluating prior knowledge about taxes and financial charges and carrying out a study to decide the most suitable installation location for your business.

The business plan is a document that describes, in writing, the objectives and what steps must be taken, reducing risks and uncertainties. It allows you to identify and restrict your mistakes on paper, rather than making them on the market. 

 

There is no rule of thumb as to what factors should be considered in your plan, but there are some essential elements you should consider:

  • business profile. What's my business?

  • Vision, mission and goals. What sets me apart and where do I want to go?

  • Market research. Who are my customers, suppliers and competitors?

  • Operational strategy. Where will my company be located? 

  • Products and services. What are my products and services?

  • Marketing plan. How will I reach my customers?

  • financial strategy. What investment is needed? How soon will I get a refund?

At the end of drawing up your plan, you should be able to assess the viability of the business and, with that, decide on maintain or expand your company.
